Finger and toe nails are evolutionary leftovers from claws.
Because toescrews wouldn't work, and neither would toerivets nor toebolts nor toestraps nor toeglue.
To protect our toes!
I use to think we needed toenails, until i arrested this womans son, on an outstanding warrant. his mother answered the door barefoot. this woman had no toenails, at all. she walked perfectly.
Maybe we do, maybe we don't.
Good question. We technically don't need them anymore. Their only purpose at this point is to protect the sensitive tissue underneath them, but we don't need that anymore either. It may be one of the next evolutionary steps, toenail-less people!!
