why use an expensive superbike with the taxpayers money when they have helicopters
-
They don't. Most use either the BMW RT or a Kawasaki. And they use those for stability, safety, speed, and maneuverability, at least the BMW.

I pulled up next to a Cheyenne Wyoming motorcycle cop on my Harley about 10 years ago at a 7-11 and was admiring HIS Harley. I mentioned that the Colorado cops I saw mostly rode Kawasaki's His response was that they tried that there once but the citizens raised hell about them buying foreign motorcycles so they switched back to Harley's He compared it to being about as popular as if they bought Toyotas for patrol cars insted of Fords or Dodges. The people just wouldn't go for it. They apparently have a big "buy American" mentality in Wyoming.

Actually the vast majority of motorcycle law enforcement use Harley's. Mostly because of the made in America issue. As for the style, cruiser vs. crotchrocket, they can be on patrol for up to 12 hrs per day. Cruiser styles are built for comfort, the other is meant for speed. I personally am a bike rider myself and the easiest way is to think of sitting on a chair for 12 hrs with or without a cushion. In reality both seats are cushioned but only one is comfortable.

comfort mostly. The pick of bikes is usually done on a bid basis. The bids are rigged in that the description can be crafted so that only one bike will fit that description. Don't know if it is legal to require that it be made in the US. For example, Is a Dodge, that was owned by a German company but assembled in the US an American Car? How about a Toyota which is assembled in the US? It is a world wide market now. Cars and bikes don't have nationalities.

It's probably a lot more political than a matter of function. Most present day motorcycles could handle the job.
-
Because they run better onthe highways and sport bikes are slower in speed.
-
Comfort. Imagine sitting on a sportbike for 8 plus hours a day, everyday? The back injuries would be many.
-
Because motorcycle cops cruise and patrol highways. They're not out there joy riding or knee dragging. They need comfort as well as power. Streetbikes aren't too comfortable after 4-5 hours of straight riding.
