Hemingway was a journalist who had to write a lot of stories for newspapers, magazines, etc. When you write constantly, writing becomes second nature to you. However, Hemingway thought long and hard about his plots. He had to live a lot before he could write about his experiences. That takes more time than actually writing the narrative. He could have thought of his story for 10 years and wrote it in ten days.

He clearly was a literary minded person as myself who was quite capable at hammering out coherent and quite legible print material because he had the innate ability which catapulted him to all his journalistic success. He had the proper mindset that allowed him to put thought to print. He had quite a lot of first hand experience with the subjects that he dealt with so it was made facile for him to put to print what naturally flowed from his mind.

He was obviously on speed.

I can write very quickly. I have a series of four novels ready to go to a publisher now. Once the research is done, some writers can complete things very quickly.

My father knew Hemingway. Most folks who know anything about EH know that he was extremely disciplined. He wrote EVERY DAY from about 8 in the morning until noon or so - then did other things the rest of the time. When you apply yourself to writing in that way, you're bound to get a lot of work done. danbes

He was a napper. He did not sleep a full 8 hours or so.
