Help answer this question below.
The minimum age for enlistment should match the age for drinking alcohol. If a young man will risk his life for his country then his country should certainly be allowing him to have a beer.
Im both ways on that. I think an adult (so age 18) should be able to make the decision to join, but at the same time 18 is still a young age and people make decsions they may regret later because of naivness and imaturity etc.
Either raise the age for enlistment or lower the age for drinking.
Yes, the age to enter the military should be 21 (or older), as it is for drinking alcahol! The human brain does not even fully mature until age 20! They do not FULLY understand the commitment they are making when they join...they may think that is what they want right then, but they truly don't know what they want to do for the rest of their lives until mid twenties now days. There are too many options out there...that is why many of our young people choose the military...for direction, but lets be realistic...the horrors of war is no way for our youth to get their feet wet in the world! Lets raise the age, and give our youth a chance to see what life has to offer them, before they make that kind of commitment. They are not mature enough to get married and have children at that age...do you want them on the battlefield?!
Technically yes, but it's unrealistic because our military forces would understaffed and compromise national security in the process. The older a person is the less likely they'll join the Armed Forces because they begin understand how dangerous it could be.
How would you make up for the troop deficit? How did you get people 21 and up to join?
21 sounds good to me.
it shouldn't matter if they are old enough to drink or not. they need to raise the minimum age requirement to join the military because they are pulling these kids right out of high school and taking away their life experiences so when they do retire these people dont know how to function in normal society. it seems like the younger you are when you join the more prone to mental and social disfunction when you get out.

You're reading Should there be a higher minimum age requirement to enlist in the military?

I agree with you. If our society considers a person too young to consume alcohol, I think it should also follow that this same person is too young to be operating military weapons and go to war. I think age 21 for alcohol is fine - I would actually vote to increase the age to enlist in the military to that age even though I prefer the minimum enlistment age be 25 or older.

It's one of those things where the government wants it both ways. Thanks for the comment.
