Help answer this question below.

I own an old 1989 Winnebago motorhome that is equipped with 8.0 R.16.5 tires. Several tire dealers have told me that this size tire is no longer made. What is involved in switching to either 16" or 17" rims and tires to match?

    Go to a large salvage yard and tell them you need a set of 16-inch wheels from a late model pickup, steakbead, tow truck, cutaway van etc. Anything built in the last 10 years should not have half-size wheels. Just make sure the width of the new 16-inch wheels is about the same as the existing wheels. The only other variable in play is the make of chassis your Winnebago is built on, Ford or Chevrolet/GMC. Once you get a set of standard 16-inch wheels, you will have a much easier time finding tires.

    I have a dodge mini motorhome,, a.k.a. sportsman that had the 16.5 rims and dinosaur tires..The tires I kept on there for 30 yrs,,LOL (I don't recommend keeping tires for 30 yrs on any vehicle)
    Our local tire dealer said he can fit me with 16.5's but don't have a blowout in B/F egypt,, ya ain't gonna find billy bobs tire store having them in stock. And the price of the 16.5's where $178.00 each for low grade cheapies, I went to scrap yard and found 16 inch steel rims for $20 each ,, and that was a $140 investment,, then I bought a real nice set of *truck tire in 225 R 16's at $84 each, which was a $588.00 investment. (would have been $1246.00) just in tires if I had stayed with 16.5's.
    So I ended up only spending $728. almost HALF,, excluding tax and balance and mounting..
    PLUS the 16's have a much better ride and I increased my fuel mileage from 14 mpg to 16 with newer radial truck tires and a smooooth ride.

    go to your local RV dealer that sells parts also, you will need to buy new wheels sorry to say buy in the long run tires will be cheaper.
    size of tire you will be going down to is:

    LT 215 85 R16 buy wheels to match, I believe they are 7" on width but its been like 10 yrs ago when we did our so my memory is a little dim

    We have a 1973 Dodge Champion M/H and the Winnie and it have alot in common

    800:R 16.5 tires are indeed still made by many manufacturers. last set i purchased was from badyear and that was just 2yrs ago...dumflop also sells them as well as flinstone. they may not carry them in stock but still do sell them.

    there is no 17" availiable 4 motorhomes that came factory that i know of...don't know the length of ur home;, but they did sell them with both 17.5's and 19.5's...a motorhome salvage yard could help u with that...but look at the investment first...thats 7 tires and wheels you'll need...say $250 moderate estimate per tire and wheel thats $1,750 for 7 wheels and tires..

    MANY motorhomes and older medium duty trucks and farm equipment still using the 800R16.5 tires so they r still sold...as well as an 8:75R16.5.

    Just get rims that match the bolt pattern and offset. Should be easy. Get the 17s to make sure there's room for your brakes and all. Then you can get tires whenever you want.

    8.75R16.5's will work on your RV, and they are still available, albeit special order.

    You'll need to purchase new rims and tires. The winnebago dealer should be able to give you the appropriate required sizes or sell them to you directly. Purchace the new tires mounted on the new rims Other than the purchase the lugs should match and you should be able to put them on the RV yourself. Consult the dealer.

    First you need to know weather your Winnebago is built on a Ford, Chevy/GMC or Dodge chassis. Once you answer that question, you will need to buy a set of 16" wheels (new or salvage) that fit a 1989 model year pickup/steakbead/cutaway etc of your make that was built with dual rear wheels. You will need a set of seven wheels because you will need to replace the spare too. With the 16” wheels, the new correct tire size for your Winnebago will be LT225/75R16, load range E. This size tire will have almost exactly the same outside dimensions of your current tires. The good news is that this is a very common size so it will be easy to find the right tires, and you may even be able to buy a used tire for the spare.
