There are several contexts in which this practice is actually pretty helpful. For example: If someone asks a factual question e.g. "What's the highest mountain in Africa?" no-one answers. The original querent later finds out themselves from another source- they then post the answer they discovered on the site to help out others.
Secondly, someone asks for advice e.g. "I think my girlfriend is cheating, what do I do?" They get a few answers. They then come back to the site later and post what action they took, and how it turned out, in the hope of providing help to anyone else in the same situation.
Thirdly, there's the "opinion collecting" question: e.g "How is religion helpful to society?". The querent isn't so much looking for a "correct" answer, but is interested to see different people's approaches to the subject. They might then legitimately add their own view to the collection.

I don't see that it's necessairily a bad thing. Any information is helpful- why does it matter who posted it?

Darryl, the reason some of us ask questions and answer our own questions is simply because we're helping others out, once we have found the answers!

I hope this helps to answer your question! :0)

If you look in the contest rules, it IS allowed. But if you look at the type of questions I ask and answer, you can see that there is very useful information in them. In the past I used to take certian subjects and ask like 30-40 questions just in that one subject. The more questions and answers there are the more useful AB becomes-- as was discussed in the past.

Though I'm not sure how useful lame questions like "what is the least effective way to kill a spider" is or if it contributes to AB positively. (no offense)

Maybe the person that asked the question found the answer before anyone got back to them, and decided to share it?
