Today, I heard the words "extra-marital affair" regarding a former NJ town Mayor. What is the difference between an "extra-marital affair" and an "affair"?

One is when you get caught and reality hits you in the face and wallet. An affair is when you think you are doing something romantic and no one knows but the two of you:-)

An affair is a sexual relationship between two individuals who are not married to each other

An extra marital affair is an affair where one or both of the individuals is married to someone else

In both cases, it's usually called an affair when it's short lived

Technically, an affair is any sexual relationship between two people who aren't married. An extramarital affair is one in which marriage vows are being violated by the affair.

- Yes, it's all contextual. For example, if I said two people had an 'intense love affair,' it wouldn't necessarily be assumed that there was infidelity taking place. The word 'affair' itself doesn't connote infidelity, although it's commonly used in that sense.

- So that is why "cheating" and "adultery" are better words instead of "affair".

An "extra-marital affair" might be defined as one in which one or both parties are married to someone else. An "affiar" is probably between two single adults, neither whom are married.

One similarity in both the affairs is that in both of them ur hiding the reality from the society....

My affair would be an affair ur affair would be an extra marital affair....wait a minute ur married right?hehehe:-D
