If you're bi-polar and you can feel yourself becoming manic, what steps can you take to counteract it?

When I start to feel anxious or nervous I take my medication, and it works fine.

i haven't yet found a way to counteract it. all i know is that temazepam helps me get at least 3 hours of sleep, and that i have to get a trusted friend to hold on to my credit cards lest i max them all out within hours.
