No. You were not covered at the time of the accident. Trying to fool them may actually get you in more trouble. It may be considered fraud in some areas.

Usually insurance coverage expires at 12:01 am of a set date. If it was set to expire yesterday March 4th then at 12:01 am you had no insurance, so if the accident took place anywhere between 12:01 am march 4th and the time you renewed it you're pretty much screwed. I'm an insurance agent, trust me I see this all the time! Many don't understand the 12:01 am concept, and its a bummer that insurance companies don't clarify but that's the way they profit. :(

If your insurance wasn't active at the time of the crash, you were not covered. It can't be retroactive. If, in fact, you weren't covered the other driver can approach you for the damages. If you'd had insurance, they could've gone through your insurance company. You're on the hook, sorry. Good luck and I hope it wasn't too much damage and everyone's okay.
