Help answer this question below.
I did this project about two years ago. There are two ways to go about it. You may be limited if it is a molded piece (rounded front edges), to painting unless you want to try a tricky curve during relamination. It will be up to you.
Paint: Yes you can paint (not what I did and I'll explain why in a min). If the formica is solid and not lifting, carefully prep the area with any ammonia based cleaner, rinse with clean water and lightly sand. Wipe again with a moist rag to remove dust. Apply primer with a roller, let dry and lightly sand-wipe again. Your final result is going to depend heavily on your preparation, take your time. It was suggested to me to use a product called Stone Creations. I've since used this paint for another unrelated job and was quite happy with the result, as it gave a nice texture and has held up in a high traffic environment. Paint with a roller, let dry and apply a second coat. When dry, coat with a poly sealer, two coats.
Re laminate: This is the route I took because it was more bother trying to get a better match using the paint, and the cupboards went well with the new laminate, eliminating yet another job. The molding was not an issue as it was a square front with a stainless, removable edging. There were more colour options with the laminate. If the existing surface is bonded ok with the substrate as mine was, it was a simple matter of prepping the surface as you would for paint,( I had a hole to fill) cutting the laminate to fit and using a solvent based contact cement, spread evenly over the new piece. Place the new piece on old laminate, weigh down with old books (new will do too) and clean up edges before the glue set with a diluted solvent cleaner. Good Luck, have fun and prep well.
