Houdini Apprentice is free and Houdini Apprentice HD is only $100, but they both come with a non-commercial license. Modo 401 and Lightwave 3D are similar to 3DS Max in function and cost about $900 if you need a commercial license. If you're just interested in modeling, K-3D is pretty good for a free program and I don't think there are any restrictions about using it for commercial work.

I use blender, its free, pretty feature packed. Now Im not sure how it runs on x86, PPC windows, or Mac. ive only used it on Silicon Graphics IRIX
