The elephant figure when associated with luck, originated in India. The Hindu God Ganesha, which we pronounce Ganesh, is the elephant god,and is sometimes called "The Lord of Success" .India has festivals to honor Ganesha, to bring good fortune.
They're also supposed to be looking out of a window. Also, they are a sign of good luck, not just luck. There are two types of luck.
This is just a guess, but I imagine that having a strong trunk on an elephant would be a sign of male verility leading to a large family and lots of food for a farming family.
If you were told "A pox on your house...you will have 7 years of bad luck starting now"...would it bother you or wouldja fuggeddaboutit?
