I have a friend who flipped off a police officer who now has a court date because of that. So...I would say the police can haul you in for that.

You technically have a first amendment right to curse at a police officer (assuming you are just cursing and not interfering with the officer's job or creating a breach of the peace). However, most cops don't care much about your first amendment rights and may arrest you or ticket you regardless of those rights. The judges that handle these kinds of minor cases are not necessarily rocket scientists (or constitutional law scholars), so they'll probably find you guilty. Unless you don't mind spending a few hours in jail and can afford a decent lawyer, I wouldn't recommend it.

Yes. It is also legal for them to smack you with a nightstick because of it. Freedom of speech is kind of a common-sense sort of thing.

Well according to our civil rights, yes. But apparently there's some fine print no one knows about that you have to exercise your rights in an orderly, respectful fashion. Police are power hungry and abuse their power any chance they get. So you'll get shit for swearing at them.

- Sure we are poop. Just gun carrying power hungry people that put our life on the line each day so folks can swear at us, most of us are use to it, and frankly its better to watch the reaction of a total crazed fool cursing at us with us not saying a word. It is not against any law to curse at a police officer. However be ready to be detained a few hours trying to explain to the office why you have a need to use such language, cause detain you they will. And then convince the same officer not to issue a disorderly conduct citation, just so you are forced to go to court and have a nice wait for about 3 to 6 hours before your case is called and then have it thrown out because the issuing office just did not feel like showing up, but then again you never can tell if the office will show and if he shows and you do not awwww then see what happens, its called a bench warrant for your arrest for failing to show. So we can pretty much give a pay back without busting a sweat!Have a nice day

- I have also found it to be true that when a person is in the wrong they seem to find blame with all around them rather then standing up and be accountable, its human nature to shift the blame and curse out the cop. I mean when your in the wrong who else is there to blame?

- well you WERE a cop so of course you're going to blame the other person and wouldn't take responsibility if the person really wasn't "in the wrong". because believe it or not, sometimes normal citizens aren't wrong, and the cop is wrong. i just know that a LOT of cops DO abuse power. if you were wrong, would you give the citizen your badge number? or would you ride away in your crown victoria and give them a fake badge number? i know quite a few cops that would.

- Lets take a look at this, I happen to know and have arrested many abusers from all walks of like. Some people abuse their status no question, when it comes to the majority of police officers more times then not it is because their is a valid reason for attracting the attention of the police officer, seldom is if ever is it because we just want randomly want to pick a person out on the streets to hear a person curse us out. However that is not what the question is that is being asked, what is being asked is if it is LEGAL to do so, sure it is, then you also will be man enough or woman enough to get exactly what falls your way.

- Anberlin evandad compares because there is a total lack of respect for anyone not just police. This person behind evandad is exactly the reason why we cops laugh when being cursed out by people. Show me once where I was rude or crude with my debate with poop (to which was an enjoyable chat) yet along comes evandad to try and sway the topic to a name calling of "who is stupid" just goes to enforce my point entirely, don't you think? I made the comparison because it was done with a remark about Rodney King (ie evandad remark) situation which unless you have read the entire report, not just saw a brief CNN clip, you know nothing of what you compare.

The police should never curse at you. You cannot sue them, but it is very bad manners as we are to look up to them as examples and they probably should be reported.

last night my boyfriend and i got off of a long day of work at a concert and we were looking for our ride.

my boyfriend was on the phone with our ride and he walked in the street to wave them down.

a cop drives up to him and screams "GET THE FUCK OUT OF THE STREET"

my boyfriend said "ok, relax" and walked on the sidewalk.

next thing you know there are 2 cop cars and they are in his face screaming at him.

"WHAT THE FUCK DID YOU SAY TO ME?" "WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU THINKING?"

so our ride, my bfriends parents pull up, get out and ask him why are they surrounding him and screaming at him.

the officer said "YOUR SON TOLD ME TO RELAX, THATS DISRESPECTFUL TO SPEAK TO ME LIKE THAT."

at that point i said "dont you think its disrespectful to curse at him?"

he said "GET BACK IN THE CAR ALL OF YOU I WANT YOUR ID'S."

(mean while there are about 50 drunken concert-goers in the street. some mocking the cops.)

end of story we got two tickets.

one for improper behavior and another for obstruction.

WHAT CAN I DO????????

please tell me.

- Take it to a judge. If the cops have a history of complaints of that nature the court may overturn the tickets. You might also want to go down to the Police Head Quarters, and file an official report. No peace officer should ever behave that way. No matter the circumstances. Did you witness what your BF said to the police, because their reaction is totally irrational, seems to me that there is more to the story than we've heard.

An officer may curse in general as everyone else does, however the officer may be governed by his standard operation procedures not use profane language at the public in the course of their duty. If an officer offends you, you do have the option to report the incident to a police supervisor and it will handled through internal afairs.

The verb 'curse' covers a lot of ground from mildly coarse language to full blown blasphemy. You would have to be a wee bit more specific about what kind of cursing you are referring to.

Hmm well it's a very controversal matter hunny! It's not right by any means BUT as that person has a higher authority over you, they may well get away with it :(, It really depends on who deals with the police officer who cursed. It's wrong and that officer shouldn't get away with it, but nowdays the world is so controversal that the officer may well do.
