What do the lyrics to "Barely Breathing" by Duncan Sheik mean in-depth? I understand it, but I dont. When he says "But I don’t suppose it’s worth the price, worth the price, the price that I would pay" Wht does that mean?

    Nibble nibble bite nibble

Sounds to me like he doesn't think it's worth it. He's basically putting way too much into something that he won't get nearly enough back from.

    1) Here the lyrics:
"I know what you're doing, I see it all to clear
I only taste the saline when I kiss away your tears
You really had me going, wishing on a star
But the black holes that surround you
    Are heavier, by far
    I believed in your confusion
    You were so completely torn
It must have been that yesterday
Was the day that I was born
    There's not much to examine
    There's nothing left to hide
    You really can't be serious
If you have to ask me why I say goodbye

    'Cause I am barely breathing
And I can't find the air
    I don't know who I'm kidding
    Imagining you care
And I could stand here waiting
    A fool for another day
But I don't suppose it's worth the price
The price that I would pay

Everyone keeps asking: "What's it all about?"
I used to be so certain
    Now I can't figure out
    What is this attraction?
    I only feel the pain
    There's nothing left to reason
    And only you to blame
    Will it ever change?

    'Cause I am barely breathing
And I can't find the air
    I don't know who I'm kidding
    Imagining you care
And I could stand here waiting
    A fool for another day
But I don't suppose it's worth the price
The price that I would pay
But I'm thinking it over, anyway

    I've come to find
    I may never know
    If your changing mind
    Is it friend or foe?
    I rise above
    Or sink below
With every time you come and go
    Please don't come and go

    'Cause I am barely breathing
And I can't find the air
    I don't know who I'm kidding
    Imagining you care
And I could stand here waiting
    A fool for another day
But I don't suppose it's worth the price
The price that I would pay
But I'm thinking it over, anyway... "

    2) Some interpretations:
"This song, to me, is about a guy who finally realizes the relationship with his girlfriend that its finally over completely, after "on again, off again" with her for a while. "I rise above or sink below with everytime you come and go"~ i think this is saying that he wants it either to be done and over, or for them to be together. also "I dont suppose its worth the price, worth the price, the price that i would pay... but im thinking it over anyway" means that he's willing to give it another try, if she wants to. "

"this is my absolute favorite song ever written... the writer hasn't finalized anything... he's so confused. he's never felt emotions like these - yet he realizes they are not mutual... he doesn't want to let go of all he's found - while he knows the consequences might be great.... he tells us he knows this - but what are a few consequences compared to the intense emotions running through his head... he knows it's wrong - but he's thinking about it anyways.... "

"I believe this song is about true love...corny as it seems, that's what I think. I'm not talking about a fairytale love, but one where you have to sacrifice. It's like when you love someone so much, but the timing is so wrong, and you feel as if the timing is ALWAYS wrong. When you used to be able to depict every little thing until it finally gets to the point where odd ends just don't meet. You know that they really care, but it frusterates you when they show everything BUT love. You know that you love each other, but everything between the two of you just doesn't fit, and you constantly find yourself asking "why?" You wonder how it got this far, and realize that YOU brought it this far. You wanted it, and it's so over-whelming that you have no clue what to do. So you find yourself apart from one another, just to be together again. Is it ever enough? When are you not capable of not handling anymore. And if it is too much to handle, why do you persist on more? It hurts when you know that this could be it. This could be your last goodbye, but maybe it's the best for the both of you. Don't set yourself up for something you don't want, even if you're constantly questioning it. This song is basically about all the "what ifs" of a relationship. It's reality...and reality is telling me that this a really great song. Believe every word that it says. Think of it as...therapy. "

"This is one of my favorite songs... because from what I have experienced it holds true. In several occasions. It's obvious he doesn't want to let go something that's already falling apart. I have felt how you think you and that other person wants to work it out and still be together but how it's turning out, you get skeptical about how that person feels. Does that person really care? then if he/she is.. then why is this happening. And you are tainted with this problem, and like the other guy said too over-whelming that he "can't breathe." and about come and go... i guess she goes when she's mad at the situation but always comes back... u want it that way but then the painful cycle continues. you feel like a fool to have this keep on going.. but then you can't shake away hope. "

"The girl he's singing about in the song cheated on him. Listen to the song again with that in mind. He was in love with her. She's crying to try to keep him, claiming she's "confused". And she keeps "changing her mind." That's why he can't stay with her.

"I believed in your confusion, you were so completely torn. Well it must have been that yesterday was the day that I was born."

That makes so much sense if you think thats how he feels because she cheated on him.

"There's not much to examine, there's nothing left to hide. You really can't be serious if you have to ask me why"

Theres nothing left to hide because its already out in the open. He found out. That's why she can't be serious if she has to ask him why he's leaving.

He was in love with her, but she's was so "confused" and empty (black hole analogy)..she used him and broke his heart.

And now he's Barely Breathing because of the pain.

I love this song so much, its one of my all time favorites, but it makes me so sad. "

    3) "Happy to be working, but overwhelmed by the publicity schedule sparked by his Billboard top 20 single "Barely Breathing," Duncan Sheik says--with no irony--that he barely has had enough time to catch his own breath during the endless promotion for his eponymous solo debut. "
