My wife really needs to answer this question. she is a Gone with the Wind, nut. here is my off-beat answer. The book was written by margaret mitchell in 1936. its a great novel, dealing with the civil war and reconstruction. its about the life of scarlett o'hara, a spoiled, rich plantation owners daughter. she had been raised to enjoy the good things in life, until the civil war broke out, the north against the south. After the fall of Atlanta, scarlett returns to the plantation and saves it from the carpetbaggers and northern soldiers. she becomes harden and vows to save the plantation and never be hungry again. In a nutshell, this is it. in sheer reading ability, no other book has ever been written to surpass, Gone with the Wind. P.S......a first edition printing of this book is worth a fortune!

Actually, the first answer above is only half of it. It's really about Scarlett O'Hara and Rhett Butler. I mean sure that whole Civil War background is well written (according to the prejudices of the time this book was written), however as I said, it's just background. I doubt the women who rave about this book do so because of the background. They do it because of the passion the virile Rhett Butler has for the beautiful, spoiled, passionate and flawed Scarlett. Rhett isn't a gentleman in the eyes of society, but the discerning reader will see that he is indeed a gentleman where it counts. Miss Mitchell's beautifully crafted chapters make this more than your average fluffy romance. - Alex Seth

The novel Gone With The Wind, written by Margaret Mitchell was a hit starting in 1939 when the book was published. It's about a civilization that is "Gone With The Wind" - the Civil War and Reconstruction period. The novel was successful around the world. Margaret Mitchell won a Pulitzer Prize for Gone With The Wind. No other book has sold more copies worldwide other than the bible. During the fall of 1965, I read the novel and it captured my heart. The story and the characters are enduring.

In the beginning there was wind. Then the wind left. And everything else was also gone, with the wind.
