It isn't more of a big deal. The problem is that his high profile makes him a very attractive target, which adds to the danger he, and more importantly his colleagues, would face. For this reason his presence there wasn't made public. Unfortunately putting soldiers' lives in even more danger than they already were is a minor issue to the journalist who broke this story.

What the hell, that was months, even years ago IIRC. They only told everyone he was fighting in Afghanistan after he returned home, so the Taliban would not know. EDIT: oh, this was asked feb 2008. My bad.

It's great that he chose to go. How many of the Bush kids went? Their Dad sent our sons and daughters, but neither of his daughters signed on; and neither did brother Jeb's kids. What hypocrites! And, with very few exceptions there were few Congressional children in the service either. they can send US but wont send their own.
