I prefer the general ones. That way, I can get whatever I want/need at whatever store I can get the best price at.

Here's how I look at it: Giftcards are awesome if you don't know what to get a person (they're great to receive from a person who you think might get you something lame, too, lol), but they're still slightly impersonal. It takes absolutely no thought to get someone a Visa giftcard, you might as well hand them cash. At least take the time to come up with what STORE you think they might like to go to, lol!

I don't like gift cards of any variety. I tend to lose them or forget them and it's just a hassle to me to try to carry them around and remember to use them before they expire. Also, I feel that gift cards are a cop-out as far as gift giving goes. If you are either clueless about the person you are buying for or just too damn lazy to try to find a gift that will suit them, you just buy them a gift card.

I know this may sound tacky, but I prefer cash gifts. There is usually some charge to "prepaid credit cards", either to fill or to maintain. I've been known to sell gift cards I've received for the face amount and use that money to get something I've wanted at a flea market (I used to buy one-of-a-kind hand-crafted items) or another store. I greatly appreciate the time and effort spent choosing a gift, but I'm not always easy to shop for.

As a cashier at a department store I LOVE the specific ones. The visa gift cards are annoying. One cannot use two at a time as they are both considered credit cards. Also, if I have to void a transaction, the person cannot use their visa gift card because the money takes about a week to put back on the card...they are a pain in the butt. haha.
