How many times has a non-pitcher been used as a pitcher in the major leagues?

    I know Jose Canseco pitched for the Rangers a long time back, and i'm sure there have been other instances as well.. Loretta was probably a pitcher in high school or something where as canseco? i dunno maybe in little league, lol

    This is very rare since the bullpens are so large; the only instance I can think of off the top of my head is Mark Loretta the former Redsox 2nd baseman (recently signed with Houston Astros) who pitched an inning while with Milwaukee in 2001 during a long extra-inning game. He gave up 1 hit and 1 walk but no runs, and struck out 2!

    Maybe other people know of some other occasions this has happened...
