  • Mosquito bites tend to affect me and my son in the same way... if we get too many, it can get really painful. I've found that benadryl is the only effective treatment--and DEET the only prevention.
  • I've always wondered this myself. I also get pretty bad reactions to mosquito bites. Mine get huge and they hurt to touch; almost like I've punched where the bite is. My mother also gets the same reaction, so I wonder if it might be genetically related? Or maybe it has to do with similar sweat or blood, or something? Not sure what causes it...but I do agree that using a bug repellant with some amount of deet is the best way to keep these suckers away from those of us who react so strongly. I also wonder if your daughter might also have bad reactions to bee stings...? I would suggest taking some procaution against a potential bee sting since she'll probably be very allergic to those as well... Oh, and as a home remedy to the itching...try making a combination of cornstarch and rubbing alcohol...it gets messy when it dries...but it's the best thing at relieving the itching!
  • Hi, same happens to my daughter. Anywhere she gets a bite it swells like crazy. The worst spot is on her forehead. Several times she has had a tiny bite on her forehead that progressively worsens until she is so swollen she can't open her eye for 2 days. I've taken her to the doctor twice. Her doc says it's an allergic-type reaction, but it's not actually possible to be allergic to mosquito bites. Anyway it's super uncomfortable for her, she wakes up crying, scratching herself raw. She's 7 now, so she tries her best not to itch, but when she was little she couldn't help it. We have tried every cream out there. Benadryl cream works pretty good, as well as hydrocortisone ointment. Oral Benadryl works great, but I have a hard time getting her to take it! Right now she has 5 on her legs that make her look like she has tumors. She is getting so self-conscious about it. a few weeks ago she had one on her foot that swelled so bad she couldn't get her shoe on for 3 days! We could be right next to each other outside and I might get one or two bites, but she'll get eaten alive, even with repellant. We have been using deet, although we shouldn't for a child, but them vampires just love her blood! We have to reapply every hour but she still gets eaten. She must have some really sweet blood!
  • Yes, I am also allergic. I once had one near my eye that got so large it caused my eye to swell shut. It looked like I went two rounds with Mike Tyson. You can be allergic to the enzymes in their saliva.
  • My little one is VERY allergic to the saliva that a mosquito excretes when they bite, to numb the wound until later on when it wears off and become itchy... For some, like our children, the allergy is actually to that numbing agent. My son gets massive welts from mosquito bites that have in the past turned black like some kind of necrosis! It is horrible but does go away with benedryl, it took a rather expensive trip to the emergency room years ago for me to learn that. The only thing you should worry about is if the bite causes breathing issues.
  • It happens to me, they swell up the size of a pepperoni and it hurts really bad after my skin stays bruised I hate it
  • I think so... i swell up too...
  • yea my gf is extremely allergic to mosquito bite, if she gets bit it gets HUGE!!!! its crazy, but it goes down fairly fast.
  • My sister swells alarmingly with mosquito bites which kind of sucks for her since were in Florida. Benedril and anti itch/burn lotion seems to help somewhat.
  • YES! My daughter is allergic to any ants & mosquito bites. The site gets very red, warm to the touch, & sometimes she gets a fever.
