  • pH is roughly minus log (molar concentration of hydrogen ions) so pH=7 means molar concentration = 10^-7 M This means that a pH of 0 corresponds to 1 mole per litre of hydrogen ions and that yes the pH can go negative. e.g. 2 moles per liter of hydrogen ions means pH= -0.3 but clearly there is a limit to how many hydrogen ions you can fit in a liter. 10M HCl has a pH of -1 The most negative pH for a real solution that I could find is -3.6
