Why do elephants have large trunks?

If elephant trunks were smaller, they could not go swimming.

They don't have large trunks. Elephants are pretty huge so the trunk is proportional to its size. If the trunk was not the right size it would prevent them from picking up food, breathing, taking baths, etc. They still exist as a species so the trunk obviously works and is the "right" size for an elephant.

Even with the human race, adaptation is happening. We have a smaller bite radius than we did 100 years ago and are feet are growing in size as is our height.
