  • If elephant trunks were smaller, they could not go swimming.
  • They don't have large trunks. Elephants are pretty huge so the trunk is proportional to its size. If the trunk was not the right size it would prevent them from picking up food, breathing, taking baths, etc. They still exist as a species so the trunk obviously works and is the "right" size for an elephant.
  • The Elephants having large trunks is an animal adaptation; the trunk allows them to function in an environment like no other large mammal. I have listed a http://www.uen.org/utahlink/activities/view_activity.cgi?activity_id=4750 here that will you to understand animal adaptation. These animal adaptations are found in all species not just the elephant in this http://www.students.dsu.edu/birkela/Science/animal_adaptations.htm you can see that all have their own adaptation. Even with the human race, adaptation is happening. We have a smaller bite radius than we did 100 years ago and are feet are growing in size as is our height. I did find a http://www.personal.psu.edu/users/l/r/lrs179/Environment%20Interactions.htm that talks about how the elephants have adapted to their enjoinment and it covers more than the trunk. I hope this was in some way helpful to you.
