But for extended periods of exercise or exertion, sports drinks, like Gator Aide, containing carbohydrates and electrolytes do help prevent dehydration and restore important minerals lost through perspiration. Plain water in excessive amounts can be poisionous. Excessive intake of water can cause water intoxication which disturbs the bodies electrolyte balance and can and sometimes have caused death.
