It depends on how physically strong they are. It takes physical strength to keep a hose that's under high pressure both still and on target, and during a firefighters duties they may be asked to rescue some pretty heavy people - so there's no reason that women can't be as effective, providing they are fit and strong.

There was a report on some news magazine dealing with this issue. The hardest part for women was performing the physical tests they had to pass in order to be permitted in the program. The irony was that the things they were required to do to pass the test, were the first thing they were taught NOT to do in course. Eg: To get into the course you must be able to lift an adult person weighing X lbs... In the course they teach you to Never attempt to lift an adult by yourself... I have no doubt that a well trained woman can be an effective fire fighter.

In general, probably not, just because of our physical shape. It is possible for a women to be as good as a man at it, but it's way more difficult. I don't think I could ever be a very effective one, just because I will always be little. *shrug* It's not a sexism thing, it's just a build thing. Women don't choose how they're designed, and I think men are better suited to do the job. But of course, women CAN do it.

I think they can be effective, but there should not be different standards for women than for men. Firefighters need to be able to save people in a fire. I don't care the sex of the person waving me, but I don't want my life to be in danger because the person couldn't lift me when necessary. Here is a good article on women and firefighting in LA. http://forums.firehouse.com/showthread.php?t=97666

Sure, as long as the pass the academy which means that they would have to be able to meet the physical requirements, just like everybody else.

Yes, they can. It has nothing to do with gender. It has to do with whether they are capable of doing it. I think it's stupid when people say women can't be firefighters (I'm not saying you think that, but a lot of people do). If I was in a burning building, I would be happy that someone was there to save me, regardless of their gender. Besides, if the woman wasn't strong enough and/or physically equipped to carry someone out of the building, then she would never have gotten the job in the first place.
