Visit your public library. They carry many books on costume through the ages. Also ask them about Civil War photographs and history books that would include photographs of the time.

Hi, good for you for wanting to do it correctly! I have been a civil war reenactor for over ten years, and would be happy to mentor you. Ginger is right about books being a good resource, but you have to know what to look for first! I recommend that you join one (or more!) of the many reenacting forums. Http://www.elizabethstewartclark.com has a forum that is newer, but quite active. This site is a fantastic resource. http://www.cwreenactors.com has a great forum that is friendly to newbies. http://www.authentic-campaigner.com is for the *very* serious reenactor. Newbies are welcome, but are expected to take an active and scholarly approach to developing their persona. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/19cWoman/ is just for women's topics, and covers all of the 19th c., but with most of the focus on the civil war years. My website is http://www.gothampatterns.com and my blog is http://gothampatternsphotos.wordpress.com/ You may contact me to begin a mentorship or with any further questions. Good luck!
