Well, there are averson tactics, such as classical conditioning, where you associate a certain stimuli to a specific response. You could also punish them for giving in to the behavior, and reward them for avoiding it. Mentally, this will help their brain to break the addiction. If they recieve a mild electric shock every time they light up a cigarette, they are less likely to do it.

I think it is as short as 2 weeks or as long as 6 weeks to break a habit if you are really motivated to quit. However some people can never stop bad habits.
