  • Tape speed is typically set, as you know, by toggling the Speed button on the remote. Without the remote, of course, changing the record speed becomes a problem. I think that on some Omnivision models (not all though - that I know), recording speed might also be a menu option. You might be able to navigate through the menu system via the buttons on the machine - try pressing ChUp and ChDown at the same time and see whether that brings up the menu. If it does, you should be able to navigate once you figure out which buttons do what. You can also try simply re-setting the memory settings. I don't know whether that affects tape speed nor if it does what the default speed is, but it's worth a try. With the VCR on and no tape inserted, press and hold Play and ChUp until the VCR turns off. That's how some Omnivision models are re-set. Next time you turn the VCR on, it will automatically go into channel setting mode (which you'll be prompted to invoke by pressing ChUp), so run through that to get your channels re-set, then check what the tape record speed is. You may have to confirm the language too. Hopefully ChUp/Down and Play can get you through that. Or just get a remote. I know that a lot of sellers on and off ebay try to gouge you, but remotes for Omnivision models are very prevalent. You can find them frequently at thrift shops. Good luck.
