Heavier bats have more momentum, less speed. Lighter bats (corked) mean more speed and more energetic swings. Corked bats are illegal. FYIs: Most major league bats are made of northern white ash wood. They can measure no longer than 42 inches and no thicker than 2.75 inches in diameter at the thickest point. All bats have a center of percussion called the "sweet spot." Most bats weigh 33 ounces.

The secret is lighter weight. The bats are drilled out to make them lighter. The only reason cork is used is so that the bat doesn't SOUND hollow (which is illegal). The cork itself does nothing.

They don't ! Corked bats are lighter then a non modified bat but there is less mass and yes a batter with gain a little bit of bat speed which helps in hitting, but the cork actually absorbs the contact so a corked bat will help with making contact but there is no advantage to hitting home runs. so people are stupid to make a big deal over corked bats.
