I don't think a child should be overburdened by the cost of college, but I think they should help out with summer jobs.

There must be reasons if someone answers no. Pursuing further studies indeed require a sum of money. Some family who face financial problem will have a hard time during that period. But for the sake of their children's future and career, they should. Of course, another solution to this problem is to apply for scholarships, whether their children excel very well or merely average in schools. Go and have a try, it does no harm.

Doesn't it depend upon the circumstances? Some families cannot assist financially and other can pay for the entire cost. I don't think it is a "should" or "should not" situation. I bet there are some kids whose parents could pay for everything, but the kids would benefit from getting a job to pay for part of the expenses. And, vice versa--lots of kids who have to work would really appreciate being able to just concentrate on school. Case by Case situation...

If at all possible I believe so. Right now I'm saving up because I know that while my extended family will help me, I need to mostly do it on my own. I would really rather not take out expensive loans if I can avoid it.

it shouldn't be handed to them on a silver platter, that happens too often in life these days with kids, and work doesn't mean anything it seems. but at the same time i think it's a good idea if the parents can help somewhat - my parents paid one semester, and i saved and paid for another semester. - plus i buy my books.

Higher education is a right, not a luxury and should be dependant on income.

I do, if the parents can afford it. The kids shouldn't have to deal with paying back loans the rest of there lives, besides. they worked through high school to get in for the first place. Lives not fair but, give 'em a break if it's easy to afford it.
