Why do we need handguns?? You can't go hunting with them and all they are good for is killing people. So then what good are they?

I stand neutral on the hand gun issue. I have 5 kids at home with me & we live in a 1/2 million dollar home, so it's not too far fetched that someone would try to break in. I would kill an intruder in a heartbeat to protect my family. In FL, it is 100% legal to kill an intruder if they are in your home. My family is too important to me to concern myself with killing a criminal to save my kids.

i hate violence...guns shouldnt be used....now police r starting to use them for no reason...one bullet the guy is down....hes dead....they keep shooting for power or idioticness....a lot of ppl have guns inside their house....i find that WEIRD...

Why do we need guns at all? And, a closer look at the Constitutional amendment favoured by pro-gun activists will reveal that the amendment was instituted to assure the country had a proper militia to supplement the poor organized military they had at the time. We now have the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, National Guard, and local police service to protect the country. We no longer require a militia. In the US in 2004, there were 9,200+ murders (not counting accidents and suicides) committed with a firearm. There were 1,800 with knives. In the UK the same year, there were 77 deaths related to guns, which includes accidents and suicides. And that was HIGH. And there were less than 400 with knives. I'll take my chances with the knives.

Handguns are very useful because they are small and light compared to rifles, shotguns, etc. and it is much easier to move around with them. They are perfect for police work and in some cases in the military. Yeah, not just anyone should be able to get them...... and they can't, because it's illegal without a special permit. So unless you are proposing that we stop production of handguns altogether, which wouldn't stop criminal use of them because they would just have black market-like production underground, import from overseas.......that would be a good way to help out the criminals.

The second amendment of the constitution protects people's right to keep and bear arms. This right has absolutely nothing to do with hunting. Some handguns are accurate enough that they can be used for hunting. Handguns are mostly for self-protection because they can be easily carried and concealed. Woman and the elderly especially would become victims of crime more easily if they were not allowed to carry a handgun for protection. Rapists, thugs and murderers do not know who is and who isn't carrying a handgun and this deters some events from ever taking place. Americans use firearms (mostly handguns) defensively an estimated 2.5 million times a year.

Ummm... we need guns to protect our land, our family, our freedom, our property.. If someone attacks you or invades your property, how will you protect yourself?? Karate? Kung fu?? Criminals will always have hand guns. Whether handguns are legal or illegal, Criminals will always have them. after all, they are CRIMINALS, they don't care whether they're legal. So, Why shouldn't we be allowed to have them to defend ourselves? Not true that all they are good for is killing people. If you have to shoot a handgun, you don't have to shoot to kill. Sometimes just displaying a weapon is deterrent enough. P.S. I don't own a gun of any kind, but the criminals don't know that. If handguns were illegal, the criminals odds would improve tremendously.

for civilians, handguns are for protection. for the military, sidearms are necessary because they can be carried at all times and there are situations where a rifle may just be too bulky. same goes for the police, they can't always walk around with their shotguns or whatever, they need something that's out of the way but that they can get to quickly.

Well, what would you use to kill someone? Sometimes, people just need to be killed, and handguns serve that purpose well.

um, protection of valuables and property. without them we'd have to engage in some close quarters combat in which some of us aren't capable of doing so. Some people lack strength, so they resort to handguns.

Jurisdictions that require adults to own/maintain handguns have less crime. I think that statement speaks for itself.

Handguns don't kill people. People kill people. Weapons are just tools for people, some use them for thier intended purpose (i.e. hunting, war, self defense, like cops). Why generalize/compartmentalize? Knives kill people, cars kill people, lots of things kill people - most cases are due to the person that was in control of that object, not the other way around.

I think we need handguns because other poeple have them too. You may believe that they are wrong , or killing machines, and have no good purpose. But I do have to say that wont change the fact that many poeple are armed out there and not exactly mentallly stable, Some of us need to protect ourselves from that. Its like a domino effect. It would be an interesting place if they were never invented. But we cant go back in time.I hope you are not offended by this.

for one what state you from in my state we can hunt with handguns its a brilliant idea less wait and agrivation luging around a big gun i think that if you made a law that states anyone that is crazy or into drugs or is a fuck head shouldnt be able to use or own a gun bacically anyone who is responsible enough to have a gun should be smart enough to use it in the way its made to be used like hunting target practice shooting skeet protecting your family that kind of thing i hope i made cense

What are you talking about! My grandfather killed three bear and eleven dear with his .22 handgun. My dad also has killed a dear with his .44, which is also a handgun. All of it was legal so it is an invalid statement to say you can't go hunting with a handgun! Before stating something as asinine as that statement you should first look into what the uses for handguns are really for and what they are capable of doing.
