Henna tatoos are made from a plant. They are painted onto the body, usually at times of celebration, such as a wedding. Professional artists come to the house and paint the women. It is a great time of bonding for the ladies (much like a hen's night in western society) and they leave with beautiful designs on their bodies. These wear off after a few weeks.
I don't think they are ever done on children. Far too time consuming and too expensive. Plus, the whole experience is wasted on kids. They want something quick and significant for them. Better to get rub on tats or face painting.

I'm a henna artist, and to tell you the truth, i awlays hesistate to do henna on kids. They usually mess it up in a few minutes by rubbing it on some expensive item, especially clothes (henna stains never come out of fabric or wood, but are temporary on skin). Then their parents are mad about the stain, the kid wants their henna redone (which is a waste of time and henna for me), and to top it off, the kid could be allergic to henna, which is rare, but can happen. Doctors scarcely test for allergy to henna, so the parents and kid won't know but they'll still want a tattoo. So, I would only recommend henna for a children's party if you are 100% sure they can handle themselves and not make a mess.

Henna is a plant. Dried leaves are ground into a powder and made into a paste to dye or treat things (hair, skin, cloth), or to use as paint.

Henna tattoos are obviously not permanent.I got one this past spring break and i loved it. It stays on for about 2 weeks and doesnt leave a mark when it finally rubs off.

Here is a link about henna and temporary tattoos from the FDA/CFSAN:

    http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/cos-tatt.html

I don't see henna tattoos as being unsafe, as long as it isn't "black henna" or as long as the children aren't allergic to color additives...but is it worth the possible reactions if a child does prove to be allergic and doesn't know it?

Here is a link about "black henna" and PPD:

    http://www.hunza.com/mud/blackburn/

Children are more allergic to their surroundings now more than ever...peanuts, pets, preservatives, color additives, fragrances, and the list goes on...and SO MANY children have to carry EPI-pens in case of anaphylaxis due to an allergic reaction.

You could always call each parent and ask them about their child's known allergies, but that doesn't guarantee that a child isn't allergic, it just means that they don't know if they are allergic (unless a parent has taken the time to test their child for allergies).

I hope that this has helped in some way :)..also, check out the internet for resources about the safety of henna and temporary tattoos.
