American Civics is no longer taught in most high schools due to tight budgets and other things being more important to educational policy makers. Do you think it should still be taught? Why or why not?

It is not due to budget cuts but rather that history itself is being rewritten. Each new generation that gets shuffled through our government schools knows less and less of freedom and individual responsibility and accountability. This is by design. Sheep make better citizens for those in power.

I never did very well in this class and I turned out okay. I never understood what it was supposed to accomplish for me. I wouldn't miss it. I don't think my kids would miss it.

Of course it should be taught. People should be exposed before they are old enough to vote. It's important to all of us. Not only schools should be teaching parent should teach it, but many parent are clueless them selves.

Yes it should be taught - at least to some extent. The lack of it has us voting for some real idiots and we're doing it to ourselves. I guess it's up to us as parents to do it though.

This is a link to an article regarding the First Amendment and a survey of 100,000 high school students and administrators beliefs about the First Amendment. This would not fit in the question: http://www.kidspeakonline.org/knightstudy.htm

According to the survey 51% of high school students think newspapers have to get permission from the government to publish articles.

What monumental ignorance the first poster shows - then you and your son will bask in the ignorant bliss of political takeover. Of course it should be taught. Civics is the study of government structure in the United States. Our forefathers set forth that one of the duties of American citizens to understand how his or her government is supposed to function and to exercise his or her rights to correct dysfunction when they perceive it. Due to serious abuses of power by every branch of government, but particularly the executive and judicial, our country is on the verge of...something else not so pleasant.

I use the words "supposed to function" intentionally, as it no longer functions today as the republic it was intended to be. A major reason for that is that very few Americans are aware of exactly how their government is supposed to function and what their constitutional rights are. For example, the Federalist Papers were a series of essays written by Alexander Hamilton, James Madison and John Jay. They spelled out the reasons why the original 13 states should sign the U.S. Constitution. They ensured that each state would enjoy far reaching rights to determine laws within their boundaries. This idea has now been turned on its head, with the federal government making the lions share of decisions for the states on what they can and cannot do.

A recent monstrous misuse of the constitution is the "Obama Care" ( ) bill. It contorts the U.S. Constitution’s Commerce clause to include forcing individuals to purchase health insurance through a private company, trampling the state's prerogatives to offer health care or provide other alternatives. If individuals don't want to buy federally mandated health insurance they will be forced to pay a tax equal to 2.5% of their gross earnings to the IRS (for the record the IRS is also a non-government entity). This is outrageously unconstitutional - something the average high school student in the 1950's would know but the average American today does not. Why? They no longer take civics.
