Why do horse flies bite people? Do they drink our blood or are they just jerks?

They're not blood suckers, they are meat eaters. They bite to tear a chunk of flesh off you in order to feed.

Actually,they do bite and suck blood. when a horse fly bites you it hurts like hell.also,a horse fly can be spotted and heard from at least a yard or 2 away but,by then it will be to late your bit.i got chased by one but, i out ran it into my house there huge and buzz really loud watch out they gonna hurt really bad like a wasp sting i know from experience. :}

Horse flies evolved to feed on mammals long before humans existed. Most mammals have thick or furry skin. Humans are easy targets. Here's what Wikipedia says: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horse_Flies#Diet " Most female horse flies feed on mammal blood...The bite from a larger specimen is extremely painful, especially considering the light, agile, and airborne nature of the fly. Unlike insects which surreptitiously puncture the skin with needle-like organs, horse flies have mandibles like tiny serrated scimitars, which they use to rip and/or slice flesh apart. This causes the blood to seep out as the horsefly licks it up. They may even carve a chunk completely out of the victim, to be digested at leisure."
