    When the "V" nickel first came out the govt forgot to put CENTS on it. Some scammers gold plated them and passed them off as a new type of $5 gold piece (which were in circulation at the time).

    After people caught on in the US, they still did it for awhile in Mexico.

    Later, CENTS was added to the coin.

    One reason was because nickels were considered a lot of money back then. One way one could make a lot of money was to use the illegal nickels and play slot machines over and over and the winnings would be real money. They only had to cash out every time they won and keep using the fakes.
