It seems that some candles burn slower than others; why is this? How can you tell before you buy?

Soy wax will burn forever. Most of the time the cheaper the candle the faster it will burn.

The type of wax used to make the candle determines how long the candle will burn as well as how hot and how much soot it puts out. Beeswax burns the fastest with the most output of black soot and it's the hottest so you have the most chance of burning yourself with it, Soy and parifin wax burn cooler therefor they burn longer and usually turn to complete liquid while burning then resolidify when you put them out. They are less likely to start a fire if burnt while unattended and if they spill their own wax will put out the flame while beeswax will not.
