Question

Help answer this question below.

I was pulled over in Texas for speeding in a rental car. I had a joint in the glove box but was not smoking. The trooper asked me to search the car, but I told him no. He said I can't refuse and searched the car anyway. Is this legal?

You stated YOU had a joint in the glovebox. that relieves any other renter of this vehicle as the possessor. its narrowed down to you.

You were stopped for speeding. the trooper, apparently had a reason to even ask to search your vehicle. was it at night, in a drug neighborhood? police officers are trained to detect signs of illegal activity and apparently you had a red flag.

Something made the trooper suspicious of your actions or activity. a search can be made of any area within the drivers reach, including containers...the glovebox, for the officers safety(weapons,etc.). any illegal contraband found in the cursory search, is legal evidence in court.

Put yourself in the trooper's position. by the law, what would you have done?
