They need a Higher power. I could be another person or any thing they want.

It can be anything spiritual... I have heard of people using dead relatives or something else they made up. That or they just dont go, I have heard about that one of my friends ended up going down that path since he in his own words "only had things to get rid of".

You mean how can the "Admit there is a higher power" step adapt to Atheism?
Well, it seems to me that that step is more about coming to terms with the fact that you are accountible for your actions and that life does have some sort of meaning than it does with any actual deity.
Having a touch of that perspective, religious or secular, can sometimes help with addictions.

I use my conscience as my higher power.Alcohol successfully suppressed my conscience, and when it did nag me, another drink would shut it up.Today I have no control over my conscience-I can choose to ignore it,but if I do,remorse resentment and anger will reenter my life, and experience tells me that will lead to drinking. I have no problem asking my conscience "thy will be done today" in the morning, and referring to it before I go to sleep at night.

I've seen it done by many people. The steps don't require belief in god, only belief in a higher power. That higher power could be a nuclear bomb or just about anything. Many people use the overall group of AA as a power greater than themselves.
