My 1995 accord is difficult to shift out and into PARK. (though it is possible, just requires a lot of force). All other gears normal. I proved today that it is not a problem at the Console gearshift. It could be either the cable (as suggested on another forum) or maybe something in the transmission itself.

I'm about to try a new cable.

try the stop light switch above the brake. this will cause the car to stay in park without being able to switch it to another gear except using the key

If it takes a lot of force to get shifter in and out of park it is probably shift cable. Before replacing try lubing it. Park on inline, nose down, remove rubber boot near shifter and squirt motor oil into cable while working shifter back and forth until oil drips near transmission. Mine has been working smoothly now for months. Cheap fix so far.

Assuming you mean a automatic transmission, you can use the shift lock release slot next to the shift lever. With engine off, insert your key into the slot and press firmly down. This should release the shift lever and allow you to shift it. Set it to neutral and then start the car. YOu should then be able to move to drive or reverse and move your car.

This get's you out of being stuck, but it doesn't fix the problem. The manual indicates you should see a service person soon. Sorry I can't be of more help. I have the same problem still.

I could add some more symptoms. Maybe someone has a better idea. My 4 speed automatic is stuck in park, but the "drive" indicator is lit up in the dashboard, along with teh Park one (it's in Park.) When I rev the engine the Drive light goes off, but comes on again at idle. Interestingly enough if you shift to drive the drive indicator goes off, except maybe if you accelerate. My ATF fluid was low, but filling it doesn't fix the stuck in park symptom and when in drive it 'slips' i.e. takes a long time to engage. The indicator lights still act incorrectly.
My auto transmit car has 134K on it and has been sitting idle, outside in Colorado, for 9 months. It ran fine for about 100 miles but then suddenly got stuck in park, perhaps because the ATF fluid finally got too low.
    Any ideas?
How long to auto transmissions last in a 92 Accord?

I just took my 1992 Honda Accord shifter apart, and in doing so, I removed a clip holding the shifting cable in place, I then lifted the cable so the shifter was no longer connected. Upon removal, I found the shifter worked great. I put the cable back in place and took the car to a transmission shop and they put the car on a lift to gain access to remove the cover where the cable connects to the transmission. The cable was disconnected at this point, and we tried the shifter again and it was hard to shift, so the cable is binding and needs to be replaced.

Unfortunately, my answer probably isn't what you want to hear, but here goes. I had a Honda Prelude, manual five speed, with the same problem. It happened to be my transmission was in need of repair, most likely it needed to be rebuilt. When I parked at the Honda dealership, I couldn't back my car out of the parking space and ended up buying another Honda. Good luck.

It could be a fuse for your brake system. It could also be the switch for the brake system located under the brake pedal. Find a good "foriegn car" mechanic.. dealers charge way too much for something simple like that.

FOR AUTOMATIC MODLES : i had the same problem..it get stuck and you cant get it in gear? try this....take off the shift gear handle. remove the 2 screws ...one on the left ..one on the right.Remove the handle. then try turning the little handle to the left....it should loosen it. try it then but remember you have to press down on it when you do this.it should move in gear....but dont loosen it too much that it slips in gear easily. If it works..put the knob back on and try using it. if it slip into gear too smooth..you need to tighten it up by turning the little handle to the right. hope this help
