Cause they love jumping over the mooooooooooon!
Actually they don't go moo, it's a hum type sound they make people just interpret the sound as moo since it is easier to say.

I've seen cows moo when they're afraid. I've also seen them all moo as they're traveling along in a big herd - it's kind of like mooing in stereo, but not necessarily in unison. And also, when they need to be milked.

That's my observation, at least. :-)

Animals communicate with eachother in a variety of ways - with their body
language, with certain odors, with touch, and with sounds. When a cow
moos, it is communicating. While the languages that people use are
probably much more complex than the ones used by cows, their purpose
    remains the same.

As to the reasons that cows moo, I suppose a dairy farmer would be the best
person to ask. If you have time, try watching cows and see what is
happening when they moo. Is it time to eat? Is there another animal
approaching? Or do they just seem to be expressing themselves creatively?
    Try it!

It is deffinatley because they want fooooood. But the acient farmers got tired of them asking for fooooooood so they continued to beat them. the cows being the smart allecs they are decieded to change it to mooo instead and the farmers were tired from beating then so they just gave up. and pretty soon it was all but forgoten but i uncovered this secret from the goverment. along with the fact that Abraham Lincoln was actually a yettie and it was the yettiesberg address instead of the gettiesberg address. But that is a storry for another time. YIPPEEE

Cows were near the back of the queue when noises got doled out - us humans got the best deal with the whole talking/singing deal, monkeys didn't half do bad with the "oo oo". Guinea pigs were ushered to the front of the queue mainly to make up for the fact they were at the back when bodies got handed out and ended up being made out of the blob of infinite matter that wa sleft after everything else had been made - hence their rather exciting "weeb WEEEB" noise. Baa, Quack, Woof and Miaow were also taken - so cows had to settle for Moo. They're just grateful they got in in front of the fish.

don't think anyone really knows, its probably just the language they speak, like we speak English. Some people think its a moan that sounds like a moo and others think that their trying to say moon. Or maybe its just the sound they make.

Well, all the other answers to this are a tad...nonfactual, but as far as I know, cows do not simply moo to make noise. 95% of cow gas comes out when a cow moos, so a moo is partially a form of burping as well as bovine communication. Moo!

The same reasons cats meow. It's their way of expressing themselves. Not necessarily an particular reason I ever heard from farmers except they will moo more if excited or afraid.

because they have a hard time getting their tongue around their mouths to say the sound "N" if they could we would know they are not trying to say "moo" but really trying to say "Moon". Few know the cow is actually from the moon, and they migrated to earth to bring us tasty cheese (the moon is made of cheese). Hence the rhyme "..the cow jumped over the moon".

    In French, a cow says meuh; Dutch, boeh; Danish, muh;
and I've heard them say mmuaaahhh and mmmyarrrr

LONDON, England (Reuters) -- Cows have regional accents, a group of British farmers claims, and phonetics experts say the idea is not as far-fetched as it sounds.
