  • The shortest path between any two points on the globe is a great circle path, which can be imagined as the portion of a circle that passes through both locations and continues all the way around the globe dividing it into two equal halves. In this case, the shortest path passes over the northern Pacific ocean, but is closer to Alaska than to Hawaii. So a flight over southern Alaska would be faster than a flight over Hawaii. If you're having trouble visualizing why this curved path would be the shortest, get a globe and stretch a string tight between LA and Tokyo. The string will follow the shortest great circle path.
