I have used the free version of ZoneAlarm for years with good success. You can download it here http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/trial_zaFamily/trial_zaFamily.jsp?lid=home_freedownloads Make sure you choose the free version all the way to the right.

    ZoneAlarm or Comodo Firewall.

    Comodo Firewall:

    All the information, is here:

    http://download.cnet.com/Comodo-Internet-Security/3000-10435_4-10460704.html?tag=mncol

    ZoneAlarm:

    http://download.cnet.com/ZoneAlarm/3000-10435_4-10039884.html?tag=mncol

These are the best two Firewalls on the market, and can be either used FREE (no trial) or PAID for better updates, scanning, options and Protection. However the FREE versions are just as good, but if you pay, you get more protection.

ZoneAlarm is rated The Best Firewall Of 2009, but Comodo is pretty good too. However, i prefer ZoneAlarm, as Comodo kept bugging me with messages, as it needs to get used to how your system works, but ZoneAlarm didn't bug me at all, however it does need quite a bit of memory, but not too much. In second, is Outpost Firewall, which blocked unnecessary things, and slowed download my computer. My opinion:

    1) Use ZoneAlarm
    2) Use Comodo Firewall

I hope this helps, but if you need anymore help or information, you may email me.

You can use ZoneAlarm and Comodo Firewall, Sunbelt Firewall, Sygate personal firewall all are free.

    For Comodo Firewall (with Anti-Virus):

    http://filehippo.com/download_comodo

    For Comodo Firewall (without Anti-Virus):

    http://filehippo.com/download_comodo/4235

    For ZoneAlarm:

    http://filehippo.com/download_zonealarm_free

    For Sunbelt Firewall:

    http://filehippo.com/download_sunbelt_personal_firewall

    For Sygate Personal Firewall:

    http://filehippo.com/download_sygate_personal_firewall

For the whole list go to:

    http://filehippo.com/software/firewalls

Overall i would either choose ZoneAlarm or Comodo, not just because i have only used them but they also do the best job. Comodo does give you a headache as it comes up with, do you want to allow this do you want to block this every time an application starts, so it needs to get used to your computer. ZoneAlarm is suitable for most people as it doesn't bug you that much, and i think it is the Top Best Firewall of 2009.

Anyways i hope this has answered your question, but if you do need anymore help you can email me.

    Step 1
A firewall protects your computer from unauthorized users gaining access to your computer through the Internet or a network. Firewalls can stop Trojans, keyloggers and other malware from damaging your computer and accessing your private information. Computers on a network (shared internet) are easily accessed without a firewall.
    Step 2
To protect your computer with a firewall. There are now many websites offering high-quality, free firewall downloads. Loook for sites that offer a firewalls with no time limits.
    Step 3
This free programs are easy to use and will protect your computer from internet predators anytime you are online, and from network users in shared internet situations.

    Hope it helps.

The free AVG download has worked great for many years here.

I guess it depends on how much control you want. The one built into Windows XP SP2 isn't totally horrible, but it doesn't give you much control. For the clueless user (read - uninformed), it's perfect because it works transparent.

If you want full control, I'd recommend ZoneAlarm.

In windows if you are smart or savy, the default works great, if not, norton. In linux IPTABLES, but shorewall makes it almost windows proof.

AVG is working great. I downloaded and tried several other ones and all it did was download spyware onto my system and I had to get my entire system re installed so I will stay with AVG

  • firefox is a good one as is Zonealarm.
