  • You should only reboot servers if you REALLY have to. For windows, it would be after ciritical patches by microsoft, device driver update, etc. For linux, you shouldn't reboot for installing any software. You should only reboot if you have hardware/software problems or you updated kernel which you would like to use right away. Of course you would have to ask yourself the question, does anybody care if i reboot the server. If your answer is no, than by all means.. reboot as often as your heart desires.
  • After hours. People usually shoot for midnight or 2AM. Servers should be rebooted after Windows updates, or if there is some sort of instability. If you have a server that becomes unstable and must be rebooted every few days, scheduling a nighttime reboot is a good short-term workaround to prevent the server from dying in the middle of the work day.
  • Something not mentioned yet: Occasionally, reboots are required for firmware updates that may affect functionality. Perhaps a RAID controller is discovered to have a bug under certain failure scenarios, or perhaps a performance bottleneck can be widened by flashing a fiber card firmware, etc. Many firmware updates cannot be done without bringing the system down first. Hardware upgrades and/or replacements could necessitate a reboot.
