A bagel is a type of bread. It is made primarily from (wheat) flour and water. Unlike most breads, it is boiled in water before it is baked. The boiling gives the bagel it's unique taste -- it develops a unique "crust" versus other breads. The bagel is traditionally round with a hole in the middle like a donut. It is about the size of a piece of sandwich bread but is much denser and thicker. While originally bagels were made without much flavoring, they have evolved over the last fifty years. You can now find anything from a plain bagel, to a salt bagel, to a jalapeno and cheese flavored bagel.

It's kinda like a big, stale donut that isn't very sweet.

It's a bread shaped like a donut so it will cook quickly through the center and after a rise, it is boiled in a sweetened water which will turn the outside of the crust a shiny golden color when later baked. It should be rather chewy and not bread like or doughy.
