  • Which country? And no.
  • No. Partly because it is sinking to their level. And partly because the effects are so different for different people. A flogging that some will regard as a test of their manhood and shrug off in hours can drive others to despair and suicide.
  • I'd have to question if sentences such as this would act as a deterrent in even most cases, let alone all. Some of the children that act in this way get a worse beating from parents or each other than any sentence a court would pass. I saw some of my 12 year-old peers get caned at school and walk away with an unforced smile, feeling they had 'got off easy'. If it's not working in the way you want, what use is it aside from an expression of revenge and anger in a physical way? Society always changes and we as generations reap what we sow, in part at least. These are the children of the people I grew up with, and the society they know isn't the one I did when I was their age. Put simply, they aren't me taken forward 25 years and put in an identical situation. If the world has changed, surely new methods of social manipulation and control are needed, not old ones.
