I live in the region where a pair of sharpshooters terrorized Virginia, Washington DC, and Maryland a few years ago. We have over-reacted in a big way. We now close schools down for days any time there is just a rumor that someone might have a gun, or someone outside the school may have used a gun to rob a nearby store.

Everyone who loves their kids worries about them, but at this point, parents are pushed by the media to OVER-worry. It's not healthy for the kids, either, to have the adults running around in hysterics, reacting to threats that aren't there. What kind of childhoods are we giving them, if we teach them such statistically absurd paranoia?

I guess I'm in the "not likely to happen to us" camp. I think it's a lot more likely that a child will get hit by a car, but we don't go into a frenzy about pedestrian safety, or teach our children to live with the constant EXPECTATION of getting hit by cars. I remember being terrorized by my grade school teachers about an atomic bomb hitting our school during the 1960s, while we practiced totally useless "duck and cover" drills. A whole generation of kids was subjected to that hysteria; and now, this generation of kids is being terrorized by something that is not much more likely. I think it's a shame.

The NRA and gun lobby love it! More guns equals more ammunition sold, more profits for gun manufacturers. That's what it's all about, right? So what, a few folks get shot up or killed. Small price to pay for jobs.

I hope you know I'm kidding and mad as hell that guns are taking over our culture.
