Help answer this question below.
You can get at least 3 years out of it. You have to treat a laptop with tender care.
Whether it is outdated or not is a different story!
...depends on the OPERATING SYSTEM you have installed on it.
ANY version of WINBLOWS will substantially reduce the lifespan of your laptop--due to the amount of FRUSTRATION you will inevitably experience, and the SLEDGE HAMMER you will end up using on it!!!
most will be obsolete before htey break
I have a 486 laptop that still works perfectly and it was used by a teacher at school and looked after good so if you look after it, it can last forever
but it gets more outdated as time goes
Actually A Laptops Condoms Are firewalls and Virus Protection Programs, Even Spyware Can Have a Profound Effect on A Young Laptops Minimal Memory So Remind Your Laptop To Put On His Raincoat (jimmy hat) Hehe

It all depends on how they are taken care of. My neighbor has a really old one. It is a "portable computer" that weights about 30 pounds, and has a small flipdown keyboard in front of a monochrome screen, maybe about 5 inches square.
I personally haven't had a laptop last more than 4 years.
have it dusted once a year so the fan works to get the heat out, then your good till the hard drive fails!
G'day Mrshinyshoes,
Thank you for your question.
I would probably say five or six years depending on frequency and type of usage.
Regards
I am not sure what you mean by breakdown, but my daughter has had her computer for 7 months and we had to get a whole new cord because it severed. This was a minor malfunction, I dont know if you mean a total meltdown or what.
it depends on how you treat it, cause it could get cancer... but seriously i'd say about up to 10-20 years if you dont abuse it
depends on make/model. I have a Mitac 386 notebook, it's 20 yrs old, and going strong, tho I think the backlight is starting to dim.
A laptop's lifespan is according to how well and how delicate you treat it. One can last for years and years and never break down. It is all about how well you treat your laptop. I know a guy that has had the same laptop now for 10 years, and it still looks and works like it is brand new.
2 years period. Especially with multi core proccessors and the new hard drives basically all of the parts are coming from the lowest bidder

not if you treat it properly: Get a laptop fan to remove the heat from the CPU is key, don't drop it (obvious), the use of it doesn't matter - shut it down when not in use, it is not a desktop - treat it with care

It has a built in fan. What's CPU?

the central processing unit - the thing that gets hot as hell and burns your leg - it is the "Core 2 Duo" Intel thing - the brains of the computer
This is a laptop fan:
