  • I am 23 and just graduated and am making 60K in Ohio, which is average for mechanical engineers. But you need to be more specific. An engineer makes more out of school than most other new grads. Many of my friends can't even find a job since they blindly choose a degree program b/c it was easier than others. The funny part was is that they are surprised that i found a great job so easily and they have to flip burgers to make rent. Use online salary surveys to get a better idea for specific jobs. If you are considering going to school do your research before you choose a program.
  • I think that while average salaries vary greatly based on field, experience etc, I would hazard to guess that 80% of 27 year olds (4 years out of college, with no advanced degrees) would be making between 45k and 65k. (this is based purely on speculation) I make 42k + commision + bonus, I am 28, and graduated from college last year after serving 5+ years in the military. So I am probably somewhat of a statistical anomaly. Oh, and btw, None 123 is better than all of us, and all of his friends. In case you missed it.
  • Aquatic Eagle, you may be right, but everyone can't be engineers. I'm an engineer, and I know 60k jobs aren't guarenteed for all. I highly doubt most of his peers are making 60k in Ohio of all places. I graduated with both a BE in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering with a 3rd assistant engineer coast guard license. For land based jobs, most people in NYC with that qualification are making 65k.
  • Another variable here...hours put in. A 23 year old engineer in Ohio might make 60K, but he's probably working about 60 hours a week, with a lot of long days. He is also probably getting the privilege of working on "step 1343254" of 4245576 steps on a project. So...there's a lot to factor in here. If you want to make a lot, unless you have some crazy twist of luck, you'll be working your ass off. Hard work does "pay off". Unfortunately, if you're always working hard, you can't SPEND the money you make until you retire early...at 55. Livin' it up in your 50s baby!
  • I am 27 and make 74K yr. as an engineer. I have an MS in engineering, and a BS is business. There are lots of variables in trying to guess pay grades. For me, I took a job after my Master's in the North East which although cost more, it also paid more; to which I moved back home in Upstate NY (farmland) taking that salary range with me. So it pays to move away in higher paying area's to then move back hopefully obtaining the same or more pay where your dollar can go further.--Little off topic but just some advice!
  • Paid sometimes
