If he didn't test to see if his BS was dropping, then he's faking it. I'm a diabetic. While I eat healthier, I don't always eat healthy, either. BUT, I have "felt my blood sugar dropping", and tested. It was plenty high enough (actually, higher than in SHOULD be). I still eat "sugary" stuff, but a lot more heathy than I used to (multi-grain, sugared cereal - dry for a snack, for example, rather than candy).

"sugary, cholestoraly" are crutches. If he feels his blood sugar drop, he SHOULD test (to see if it really is), and if so, drink juice or eat fruit. (They have the "right kind" of sugar in them, and it hits the bloodstream pretty quickly. Juice is what they gave me in the hospital when mine went low enough to pass out a long time ago. And... That's a SMALL orange juice no added sugar.) Cholestoral-loaded foods, like chips, etc., are because he's missing the salt.

Now carbonated... There's really nothing wrong with carbonation... It's the PLAIN drinks that are loaded with sugar. Diet drinks or Wal-Mart's Free & Clear (or Sam's Favorite?) waters have NOTHING according to the nutritian label, but can cause Ketosis (google it), if he's suseptible. If he's having problems with after-taste of sweetners used, switching to the Wal-Mart water will help, as will just drinking water for a few days, THEN drinking the diet version.

If your step-dad takes insulin shots, they will only increase (at one time I was taking enough to have to stick myself 3 times with a Humalog pen) if he doesn't even TRY to get it under control. He can also get neuropathy... I have it in both feet, which means he can injure his feet and not feel it, causing infections. I have NO TOES, now because I kept getting infections in them, and when the infection hits the bone, they REMOVE THE BONE, the majority of the time, so it will not spread further.

It's hard for a kid to tell his father/step-father what he's doing to himself, and to the kid.

But I've been there... done that... Still have problems with my feet, and because of the amputations, now have major balance problems, both of which mean I can only walk a few feet at any given time, because I get pressure sores, causing ulcers that have to be treated at the doctor's office, and sometimes get infected, meaning IV antibiotics for a 4-6-week period. (They put a line into your arm that reaches from there to just above your heart, and the IV is done at home. To save money, you do it yourself, with a nurse checking on you from time-to-time. It will most likely cost YOU money, even if you have insurance.

If you'd like, print out this answer for your step-dad, and tell him I've been there, done that, and after a time, sugared pop doesn't taste NEAR as good as sweetened, you can get the salt from crackers (not necessarily a whole tube or box), and sugar (candy) should be kept to an extreme minimum (once-in-a-blue-moon) if not eliminated altogether. It CAN be done. If you'd have ever told me that I wouldn't be eating candy or chips (of any kind) every day, I'd have laughed at you. Now...

Good luck. I hope this helps... You AND your step-dad.

    NOTE

I don't doubt that there are times when he has to eat something in order to raise his blood sugar, as he WAS medically diagnosed with diabetes. But apparently they caught it early and it wasn't chronic or anything, and that if he lost weight, there was still great chance that his condition would improve. His food choices are just so SUSPICIOUS. I mean, it's like a terrible cycle of stupidity on his part.

Gain weight, get diabetes, eat fattening foods in order to raise blood sugar, gain more weight, diabetes gets worse, eat more fattening foods, gain weight, diabetes gets worse, eats fattening foods, ETC.

Maybe I am being too hard on him. But I never thought that cholestoral and sugary foods literally put sugar into your bloodstream.
