Unfortunately I think there are probably more people who know more about Homer Simpson than about Van Gogh, at least in the U.S.
I doubt you could scrape together even a couple 100,000 people who know who he is much less millions who could discuss his works.
I would think 300 million people might be out there liking Van Gogh, and about one in ten could discuss it well.
I bet that only 1% of those who appreciate his work could begin to discuss it.
That's just elitist. Art is visual in nature, not spoken. You look at it and it captures you. It's not necessary to pontificate about it. Just feel it.
Did any of van Gogh's paintings have religious symbolism in them?

I know the guy and his works a little bit, maybe not to discuss them on a very high scholarly level but I guess that leaves me out of the second group.
