  • The situation in Russia, after 3 1/2 years of WW1 was pathetic. In late February food riots broke out in Petrograd which led to the army/police going over to the rebel side and eventually led to the abdication of Nicholas II. A provisional government was established. The Bolsheviks attempted to overthrow it in July and almost succeeded. They did overthrow it in the 2nd revolution of 1917 in November (old style) or October in the rest of the world.
