This is an interesting question, and the fact is that no really knows for sure. However, I've found three different articles ont he net that pretty much seem to cover most of the possibilities: randomhouse.com offers this explaination: http://www.randomhouse.com/wotd/index.pperl?date=20000313 wikipedia has this to say about it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Tail_Fly And straightdope.com says this: http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a981030.html

Jimmy was bored and couldn't think of anything better to do. The song exists because somebody had nothing better to sing about and other bored people listened. Boredom can lead to a ton of crazy things, including totally useless songs.
-
I reckon that jimmy cracked corn because cracking corn is so damn satisfying, and he actually wrote the song himself because he is very arrogant, but very boring. Kind of like the middle aged men who own a bmw. Very arrogant, yet so boring!
-
Cause the song writer was on crack.
-
because, like green day put it, nobody cares that nobody cares, and so they continue listening to the song about jimmy cracking corn with nobody caring.
-
If I recall correctly the lyrics are "Jimmy cracked corn and *I* don't care." Thus the apathy does not lie with everyone, but with either the writer or those singing the song. This is strange when one considers the fact that either the writer or singers have written/sung the song despite their professed indifference.
-
Maybe Jimmy called up his connection in the mob who threatened to crack some other stuff if no one wrote the song for Jimmy.
-
Corn, when being prepared to grind, is not supposed to be cracked- that ruins most of the food value, wheat being the same way- I do not understand the how it happens. Somebody should tell Jimmy not to crack corn- that is where the point is- nobody cares about somebody ruining the corn.
-
Well someone cared enough to write the damn song. Keep on cracking ur corn, Jimmy!
-
We used to hear this song in middle school, we even made our own version, "jimmy smoke crack and i don't care," although im sure thousands of other school children have done this, i like to go back and think about it.
-
because jimmy likes to crack corn and it would relax him as well.
-
Farmers needed cheap sources of food for their animals. They would leave their corn unharvested until the stalks turned brown so the corn would harden and dry out completely. They would then crack the corn into small pieces, almost powder, so the animals could digest it. The dry, cracked corn could keep for several months if kept completely dry. It was also very high in protein and nutrients, for the price. The writer probably didn't care that Jimmy was cracking corn because it is very monotonous and had to be done often. He/she could also have been trying to show their dislike of being a slave.
-
Probably cause no one cares, so why should he?
-
Maybe because he thinks its funny and he dosn't care if anyone else thinks its funny.
-
Its something he enjoys and doesn't harm anyone. Why stop?
-
It is actually, "Jimmy crack corn, and I don't care" the I being you, so what is your answer to your question?
-
http://www.answerbag.com/q_view.php/59623 I knew I had seen that before.
-
It's not "no one cares," it's just "I don't care." Maybe if I don't care (or I guess you don't) then some one else might? (This has been asked by the way. heheh)
-
It's a paradox. A down-market version of the sound of one hand clapping. Get it?

There has been much conjecture over the meaning of "Jimmy Crack Corn and I don't care." One possibility is "gimcrack corn," cheap corn whiskey; another related theory is that it refers to "cracking" open a jug of corn whisky; another is that "crack-corn" is related to the (still-current) slang "cracker" for a rural Southern white.[7] Another, and possibly the most popular, is that the chorus refers to an overseer who, without the master, has only his bullwhip to keep the slaves in line. Most etymologists support the first interpretation, as the term "cracker" appears to predate "corncracking", and "whipcracker" has no historical backing.[8] This suggests that the chorus means the slaves are making whiskey and celebrating. Pete Seeger himself was said to explain the true lyric was "Gimmie cracked corn--I don't care",[9] a reference to a form of punishment for something very bad, in which a slave's rations were reduced to cracked corn and nothing else. In this case, the author seems to have decided that even this punishment is worth it, since the master is now dead and gone. Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Tail_Fly

I guess it's just a cute up lifting song - I remember it when I was little we sang it all the time

G'day CLP12404, Thank you for your question. The song is also known as the blue tail fly. The reference to Jimmy crack corn has several possible meanings. However, it's most likely meaning is as a reference to gimcrack whisky which was a cheap form of whisky. That is why he claimed not to care but he was celebrating the death of his master. I have attached sources for your reference. It is one of the many songs that came out of the slave era. It tells of a slave who is rejoicing because his cruel master is away/dead. It could be that the song was originally "gimcrack corn", a type of corn whiskey, which would mean that the slave is having a party while massa is absent or because massa is dead.
-
the song is a black slave's celebration over his master's death, in which he "doesn't care" jim crack corn is known to mean corn whiskey in the song jim crack corn also could mean "cracker" or typical southern white in which again, he sings about his white master he doesn't care about the death of.
-
I think someone who was arround when he cracked the corn didn't like it and wrote the song. I think Cracking corn can also be slang for farting.
-
I don't think Jimmy wrote the song. The lyrics are "Jimmy cracked corn"- unless he speaks about himself in third person... I don't think it was him.
-
Jimmy crack corn is a slave song from the 1800s. Jimmy drinking corn whisky cause his master died. "Cracker"refers to his white master. London ashes falling down is a song about death. Children's songs are not about children.
-
Almost all people who don't care are vehement about letting everyone know about it.
-
That's because he wanted to deflect attention away from the fact that he was John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt. It was his way at getting revenge upon Jimmy for making everyone sing that it was their name too.
-
There are several explanations for this, but the most logical that I found explained the true lyric was "Gimmie cracked corn--I don't care", a reference to a form of punishment for something very bad, in which a slave's rations were reduced to cracked corn and nothing else. In the song, the writer seems to feel that the risk of this punishment is worth it, since the master has gone away.
-
They wanted to make sure other people did not care as well.
-
I think the words are "I don't care" not "he don't care". That would explain it. You see, I wrote the song, not him.
-
I'm the only one that knows why jimmy cracks corn. Send me 10$ for answer 100% correct answer.

-
He probably owns a record company.
-
Who the heck is Jimmy?
-
somebody somewhere must care about him, it's just that I don't give a flying rat F*k about him - listen to the song a little closer
-
Everyone cares!Have you seen the price of corn lately!
-
Because he loves duplicates.
-
he's addicted to crack and corn and Jimmy hates rehab.
-
he is in the navy - don't matter why you do it, just get it done now
-
Because I have not CAUGHT him yet!
-
I have three corny solutions: Jimmy cracks corn because he is from Kentucky and has no teeth to chew it with. Jimmy likes to crack corn because he is a masturbator and needs something to do. Jimmy will continue to crack corn until someone cares because everyone knows that un-cracked corn leads to global warming and the destruction of mankind.
-
There's a group called Korn............and alot of people care about them.
-
The song never says that no one cares. the singer says, *"I"* don't care. He or she is not speaking for everyone. I'm sure there are people that are profoundly moved by the fact that Jimmy cracks corn. Some may even be profoundly irate, because that corn that Jimmy's crackin' was stolen from them. But I'm also sure that there are a great many, like myself, who really and truly don't care. ;)
-
I believe that the original words were "gimmie cracked corn and I don't care". Corn is still being cracked (ie broken up into smaller chunks for animal feed). The song (The Bluetail Fly) tells of a slave who is happy that his master died because he was thrown from a horse... a horse bitten (stung) by a Southern type of horsefly. While incarcerated, the slave didn't mind being fed cracked corn - a sort of bread & water type of punishment - because his master was dead. Ergo, "Gimme cracked corn and I don't care my masters gone away". I guess that his master was a real jerk. I would like to think that the slave got his freedom because of the death of his owner. I think that if I was going to be liberated, I too would eat dried corn and not care.
-
as melon scratchers go, that's a honey doodle!
-
Because the song gets your attention, which is all anyone really wants.
-
Ok now you are just messing with me. Has anyone thought to make Popcorn? With an entire stick of melted butter? Jimmy done cracked his corn and he can sit on the end of the couch and wait his turn for the big bowl of buttery, popcorn goodness.
-
Coz cracking corn is great fun.
-
Because he wrote and sang it!
-
Cracked corn was a by product of corn production. Slave owners fed slaves cracked corn (hard, uncooked, broken, cracked corn bits) as a form of punishment. The original song lyric was "gim" or "gimmie" crack corn and I don't care. The lyric "Gimmie" (through historical bastardization) evolved to "Jimmie". He didn't care if he was given cracked corn to eat because he was rejoicing in the fact that his master was dead. Death caused by a horse, rider accident caused by a blue tail fly biting the horse.
-
because he is stuck in a rut and doesn't have anything else to sing about
-
Because he just loves crackin' corn.
-
Because his master has gone away :P
